Well hello I'm back.I have been doing some ultra top secret work which you will see the fruits of in the summer, I'm making sound all far more interesting than it is, but well, its kind of cool. Annoyingly I have a load of work that Ive done recently, none of which I can actually show as it's all under NDA's. GRUMPFACE.

But this I can... new blog up yesterday on Amelia's Magazine documenting mine and Charlotte Hoyle's recent collaboration with fashion designer Flik Hall's A/W 2011 collection. Read on, its lovely stuff!

Felicity herself had this to say about my illustrations which I feel is spot on.

When I found Rebecca’s work I particularly like a section of her work named Rubbish Doll House… I really liked the texture she had worked into her illustrations, one of a girl with rams horns looked amazing with so much attention to detail and delicate lines encasing the image. I imagined her style would translate well onto the intricate fabrics in the collection.

Knut, BEST POLAR BEAR EVER has sadly died suddenly, at the age of 4 in Berlin Zoo (BEST ZOO EVER, FACT.) I saw Knut several years ago, and he was amazing and whatever people may say about captivity and that, I think he was brilliant and I am obsessed with Zoos. I go there nearly every time to go to Berlin. Its the best thing.

The Brilliant and The Dark... ON A RECORD!

Yep... we did the performances last year, and in December 2010 we were filmed and recorded at the ICA. This is now coming out in April on limited edition (oh how I love that phrase) OLD SCHOOL VINYL for your aural pleasure. And also for your aesthetic as well, as I have drawn the arse off myself creating an incredible gatefold cover for it. I REALLY WANT TO SHOW EVERYONE but i can't yet or ill get told off, so instead, here's the press release, and a picture of the magical Maya Angelou, that features in it... somewhere.... shhhh. don't tell Coughlin.

The Brilliant and the Dark is a limited edition 300 copy 12” released by Transgressive on Record Store Day documenting a live performance at the ICA on 2nd Dec 2010 in which Gaggle were invited by artists Eileen Simpson and Ben White to re-interpret a 1969 cantata for women's voices.
The radically remixed cantata uses elements from “The Brilliant and the Dark”, a work for women’s voices composed by Malcolm Williamson and Ursula Vaughan Williams, and first performed by 1,000 women volunteers at the Royal Albert Hall. The libretto approaches history from the Middle Ages to WWII through the eyes of women, via characters including witch-hunters, embroiderers, crusaders’ wives, plague stricken women, mourners and war workers, transposed into a modern light by Gaggle who reference 2011 issues such as militarized rape in the DRC or "honor" killings in the UK.
The Brilliant and the Dark is released under a copyleft license – generating a new resource available for the future reflected by the B-side of the 12” containing samples from the performance for future artists to manipulate as they see fit.

Everyone's seen it on the news, and its the hardest footage to watch that I've seen for a while. I think its easy to become sanitised to mass destruction and global events in the age of rolling news, and sadly I think come to expect it in certain areas of the world. And even more sadly perhaps when it happens to a so-termed 'developed' part of the world we are even more upset... outraged, perhaps? That the proof comes back to whack us in the face that we can't actually control nature? I don't know. Anyway, its done. The horrific extensive wholesale destruction and erasure of whole communities, histories, people. I cant do much over here. But I can, help people to donate money. So if you haven't already bought my little book from here then do so, as all the monies will now be going to the British Red Cross to aid Japanese relief efforts.

(i think Japan might need a bit more than a poke though)

Last weekend saw White Trash in Berlin taken over on Saturday night by a selection of the Trash City crew... and I think we may have slightly shook up the cool collected Berliners.. Creaturemag wanted some Valentines love today, so I sent them this.

I used to hate Valentines Day. I remember, a lonely evening, hysterical friend on the phone who'd been stood up by the dickhead she was with at the time, flatmates out on romantic date and me, Die Hard, and a bottle of wine Id snapped the cork in so I couldn't even drink. These were bad times. Yes, Valentine's Day is a horrible, corporate evil that has assimilated itself into society so we care taught to believe its normal, and good, like Mothers Day, or something. Its not. HOWEVER, its a lot easy to deal with when you have a boyfriend, and you egt flowers and dinner and shit. Its my 5th Valentine this year with my beau, but i still remember the days when it was like every couple was laughing in your face. SO this is for all the people out there who, not necessarily single, may be a bit angry. or obsessive.. or just mental.

The Gluerooms is bbbbbbbback!

Way back, in the age old time of yore when I was still single, youthful, took way way too many drugs on week nights and lived in a shared household of like minded 'artistic' types, I, along with friends and founder Mic Shaw, helped run The Gluerooms, an experimental noise and art and weird stuff night. It was constantly hilarious, occasionally painful, but always £3 on the door and £2.99 if you was a student.

Well, times moved on, the pub we did it in turned into a shit version of a good pub (ok, that's a bit harsh, its not too bad really) and it became clear it wouldn't work there any more. We grew up, ish, went off to do other things and... blah blah blah BUT NOW WE'RE BACK!

Anyhow, this is important, as the whole reason I do what I do in what I laughably call 'my career', is down to The Gluerooms. When I left my fine art course at Goldsmiths, I hated art. Well, I hated their idea of it, and kind of still do. So I didn't do anything vaguely creative with my hands (though that depends on who you ask fnar fnar... sorry) for several years, till Mic asked me If I'd like to do the posters. So I did... and here I am.

So of course, I'm doing them again.

Who couldn't love an anteater in fucking jumper for gods sake? you'd have to be dead or something.

The kind and lovely folk of the new Apiary Studio's on Hackney Road are really rather wonderful. I helped them out with some business card and website illustrations and designed a font for them too a few months ago, for them to use as they wished! In return I have a desk, the wonderful chats of an old friend and am planning an exhibition... ssshhhhhh. more about that later.

Losing a parent it turns out, is unsuprisingly horrific.
Hence the lack of any work for a while.
But, life, rather cruelly it seems at times, goes on.

Somehow I managed to make my Dad's funeral order of service.

He was a member of the William Morris Society, and a lover of all things Pre-Raphelite, and art in general. As a trained engineering draftsman, he's where I get any modicum of talent from, and I owe it all to him and my mum's encouragement for me being in the position of being able (occasionally!) to make a living from making drawings. This image was taken from a Morris wallpaper sample, something I think he'd be quite pleased about. He always wanted to know what I was working on. This one was just for him.

Oh yeah.

This is Schwange which is basically the future of clothing. Well, I want it to be the future of clothing because it fits me and it looks hot and generally brillo. Schwange - Angela Maria Platt and Kathryn Bonnar, make the Gaggle costumes we proudly wear as we rampage cross country, offending all and sundry...

They also are working on the costumes for our operatic debut The Brilliant and The Dark which has been featured before on here - and I have a fetching number I can tell you. We're performing at The Women's Library, Old Castle Street (its near Aldgate East tube Londoners) on 23rd Sept come one, come all.

Oh, and the libretto was written by Ursula Vaughan Williams. This makes me very very happy.

We've had to joy, pleasure and absolute priviledge to be involved in this amazing project.... I'll leave it to Ben and Eileen from Open Music Archive to explain.

"The video takes as a starting point The Brilliant and the Dark, a cantata for women’s voices composed by Malcolm Williamson and Ursula Vaughan Williams, and first performed by 1,000 women volunteers at the Royal Albert Hall in 1969. The libretto approaches history from the Middle Ages to WWII through the eyes of women, via characters including witch-hunters, embroiderers, crusaders’ wives, plague stricken women, mourners and war workers.

Simpson and White have negotiated with music publishers Josef Weinberger for permission to use elements from the work and invited the all-women choir Gaggle to remix the music and lyrics of the original composition for a new music video. Filmed on location in The Women's Library exhibition hall, the video re-animates the 1969 performance through restaging situations – from the backstage preparations, to choreographed moments in the live event – which are documented in photographs held in the Library’s collection. The performers are seen in new costumes referencing the originals and amidst remade props.

The video is released under a copyleft license – generating a new resource available for the future."

Crikey O Riley! I'm currently very happily embedded in a small room in east london beavering away on a new project for Nexus Productions. Its lovely though it was very warm in there today so I HAD to eat a Cornetto just to get through... In other news, whilst that's been taking up quite a bit of time, I've still been squeezing out some new work of me own. 2. This is genius, in the most truest, complete beautiful hilarious sense of the world. Brought to us mere puny humans by Rob Matthews and Tom Edwards, and published by the ever amazing and thoroughly decent bloke plus a lady people of It's Nice That, it is not to be recommended to be read on trains, for the likelihood of an Adam and Joe style comic outburst of laughter. This is on the right.

A weekend of Mitchell Spinning, Inappropriate Records, 'Guart'

It had been a long week. I've been working with Champagne Valentine on some drawings for something ill be able to talk about in a few weeks... which is PRETTY DAMN BRILLIANT but I was knackered, so I needed a nice evening out 'with friends'.
I've also stopped drinking, just to see if I can. I can. The feeling of smug satisfaction if far outweighed by boredom. I know it shouldn't be so, but it is, so until drinking gets dull, I'll start again.

The weekend got off to a roaring start with Freaks at the George Tavern, for whom the last time I went displayed some stuff a bit further down the blog (January time.) This month saw the first kind-of showing of the collection from which the last picture posted is from - It was some photocopies, as the final piece will be one image of several heads all entwined and entangled with lots of other bits of stuff. (I don't think I've explained that too well. This, again, reinforces my fine art degree grade and why I shouldn't really keep venturing into the art world. ah, well, fuck it.) But it did look good in its naked glory on the pub wall so all isn't lost for me and impending Saatchi-endorsed superslebartstardom.

ANYWAY.

It was also Coughlin of Gaggle's birthday. And so she got this.

Yes, its a card of David Mitchell. She likes him and would like to be wedded to him, I believe. But wait! His head spins as well, allowing you to point his chin towards what you would like to drink next. Of course.

I also did a spot of dj-ing that evening, with the magnificent beast that is Toby Woby, whose record collection is multi-faceted, many layered and unfathomably large and amazing. It's also got this in

which is frankly, terrifying.

The rest of the weekend proceeded quite nicely I went to the Tate to see the Arshille Gorky exhibition, which was great. Dave then 'left' some copies of his excellent and free new comic Tiny Dancing in the book shop, in an act of guerilla art, or as it shall henceforth be known, Guart.

Ahh a new week. New work.

This blog is rapidly turning into a festival of other people stuff I like, which is thinly veiling the fact I haven't got any of my own new work to put up as it's rather in progress... but it is coming on! I've got some pretty spesh collaborative plans and a half drawn epic wall thingy too, PROMISE.

That said, here's a few pictures to tempt you from the latest Sessun window displays by Carolina Melis which I again worked with to create. Sadly the weather was not as great as last time, but we got to Paris, Marseilles and Aix-en-Provence which was all rather wonderful!

Doesn't she look lovely.

We also met a great photographer in Paris, Clement Jolin through fortunate twists and turns of fate, who helped to capture the new displays wonderfully... I hope to show you his pictures soon. Clement is an Aix native as well, and followed us down from Paris... and showed us this.

I've got my Provence rosemary twig from this very spot sitting next to me on my desk as I write... ahhhhhh.

WEVE DONE IT!

We made a single and someone recorded it and then paid for us to put it out and now you can buy it on download now. Phew. Its on the usual - itunes, amazon, play... and theres a few v limited edition vinyls left from the good folk of Transgressive here.

Its got a wonderfully horrible picture of maggots on the front and this rather nice scroll I created, with a little Inspiration from the amazing Charles Vess, a huge fave of mine.

We recently had an amazing photo shoot for our birthing to the world, with the downright amazingly decent human being Danny North.. he takes rather special shots too. We tested him.. too much... but he came through with the goods. A RIGHT TROOPER. Here's a little thing he did.

I am very fortunate to have Sarah as fellow singing lady and friend. I knew she was an astonishing photographer of wonderfulness, but didn't realise she had her own website (I'm not the brightest spark) Of course, I should have known this, as i think even my chest of drawers has a website now.

A co-Gaggler and all round lovely Caroline Green has been working on creating a new clothing label with design right at the core; Chief. In her own words, it's:

'A collaborative design company that harnesses the creative talent of its community to produce original and limited edition printed goods for which the community is remunerated when the goods are sold. '

Can't argue with that, or describe it any better... So I did a few designs and put them up. Let her (and me) know what you think! ( and buy ALL of mine.)

My dear and lovely co-gagglette Laura Coxeter has ventured out into the world of business, and has created the wonderful Coxeter's Fayre - a haven of all things raw, living food related and my personal favourite current obsession, her sublime handmade raw chocolates.

Anyway, more importantly, she asked me to design the logo for her new website! So here it is. And go buy her chocolates.... they really are a whole other world of amazingness...

Here's some pictures from the second part of work I have been doing with Carolina Melis for Sessun in Paris:

We worked on a series of 16 embroideries based round bird and flag themes, following on from Carolina's large scale embroidery that formed part of the autumn/winter window hangings in the store. The embroideries are currently on sale in the Paris shop in Bastille at 34 rue de Charonne.

Emma Francois, the director behind Sessun, also sent over some nice shots of the window hangings from earlier in the year, which are lovely!

Cooor, I've been all over from Plumstead to Grantham, Hay-On-Wye and back again and its been lovely. Now it all has to stop as I really cannot eat anymore of these, even though the tin is really really nice:

surprisingly, in between the liqueur chocolates and train journeys, I managed to find time to do some work as well, as a present to my sister. This is my rather special little niece.

I've been working with Carolina since this August on a number a projects, including this for French fashion label and shop Sessun, based in Paris. Here are some pics from the first window display for their new store in Bastille, Paris.

The two windows of the shop were hung with a tapestry, and a net of hanging butterflies, all unique, named and numbered.

Wonderful stuff! and yes I am very much parping my own trumpet here.

This is a job I worked on about a year ago.. and in true Strickson style is taken a year to put it within sniffing distance of the internet. sorry... A wonderful new series of road safety videos and prints for the Department of Transport devised by Smith and Foulkes at Nexus and Leo Burnett; I had the great pleasure of working with them helping design the font in the titles. It was a brilliant experience, and I'm chuffed to bits with the outcome - (it just took me ages to tell you)

I went and did a bit of European travelling like innit. Someone's got to.

Berlin again... most of it spent indoors. Went to see my friends exhibtion at Neurotitan which was a bit good; 'Urban Witches Not Bitches' Included the work of Rubbish Fairy, Diana Arce, Fake Mistress, Legs Akimbo of the ace Team Plastique and Lucy A. Roberts and kind of raped your eyes in a very good way.

The there was the usual round of soviet war memorials and cheap karaoke.

Then a bit of being a Parisian! TWICE!

More about the second visit later... that was work related, and therefore slightly more relevant than this load of holiday snaps no ones probably the slightest bit interested in....

Went to Frieze and stood next to Jarvis Cocker for 20 minutes and that was the unashamed highlight. i still would, even the beard looks good.

Liked Ceal Floyer's piece, the huge tapestries by Craigie Horsfield at the Frith Street gallery stand and the always exciting and slightly smelly work of Roger Hiorns at Corvi MoraThere were too many haircuts though, but i think thats my fault for waiting till Sunday to go.

Sleb spot - other than Jarv, very low indeed my sources tell me - a sniff of George Michael, and thats about it.

Hmm, i might try and get some sleep after that little outburst.

Berlin U Bahn stops seem to all have diferrent fonts on their signs, which i like. I presume this lack of uniformity may have something to do with that massive wall thing they had for a while.

Drew some hands. Im rather pleased with them. Its for a website im developing for Saltarello, an early music ensemble educational group thingy. They're are somewhat excellent, and you should go and hear their sweet recorder sounds whenever you can....

Rather worryingly, I went to college with members of the panel on this. Not entrants - judges. Whilst I was busy sticking my finger up my arse at college, they appear to have been
pulling their fingers out. ( I say appear...) ach well. I did see one of them nearly vomit this morning which was pretty amusing.

Anyhow, theres some good people in this, take a look at Dan Mort - theres a little video thing on the site. He's rather excellent, and his work gets better and better every time i see it.
